DOWNTOWN DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS

Date: June 14, 2007

TUCSON ORIGINS CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES

The City of Tucson is announcing the following construction activities for the Tucson Origins Mission Complex project located south of Congress Street and west of Interstate 10.

The groundbreaking ceremony was held on June 2, 2007, and construction has started on the excavation of the Mission site. The hauling of the landfill materials from the site will begin the week of Monday, June 18, 2007, on weekdays from approximately 6:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. and will continue for approximately four months.

The City and its contractor, Lloyd Construction Company, will be using 20 trucks to haul dirt to and from the Los Reales landfill located on Craycroft Road, south of I-10. Each truck will make approximately five trips per day. The trucks will depart from the site and travel east on Congress Street to the eastbound I-10 frontage road and enter eastbound I-10 toward Craycroft Road.

The trucks will return on westbound I-10, exit at 29th Street and travel the westbound I-10 frontage road, turn west on 22nd Street, north on Mission Road, and exit Mission Road, south of Mission Gardens. The trucks will travel across an existing haul road through the future Sonoran Desert Park. Trucks and traffic are not expected to be backed up onto any roads in the area and will not use streets in the residential neighborhoods.

There will be heavy equipment operating during working hours. Water trucks for dust and odor control will be used. Staff from the City’s Downtown Development Office, Environmental Services Department and Desert Archaeology will be monitoring the excavation activities.

The project has been funded by the Mayor and Council and the final design is in progress. Excavation of the landfill at the Mission site began in May 2007, and construction of the historic structures will begin in the fall of 2007. The entire project will be complete in 2009.

Other ongoing activities include the archaeological exploration near Brickyard Lane and Mission Lane. Work is almost complete at the Mission site and is progressing at the Mission Gardens site. The landfill bioremediation project will be ongoing between the Mission site and future Cushing Street for the next two years.
