CONSTRUCTION ALERT

4TH AVENUE UNDERPASS CONSTRUCTION ALERT

This is a continuing series of construction alerts that will be issued throughout the construction of the 4th Avenue Underpass Improvement Project. These alerts will announce construction, detour and closure information as it affects traffic. Motorists are asked to obey all posted speed limit signs within the construction area and be alert for construction crews and personnel working in the area.

PLEASE NOTE: OTHER DOWNTOWN CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITY UNRELATED TO THE 4TH AVENUE UNDERPASS PROJECT MAY ALSO AFFECT TRAFFIC.

  • Beginning Saturday, June 7, through Sunday, June 15, the left lane of Congress Street between South Toole Avenue and 5th Avenue will be closed to allow crews to install trolley tracks along this section of roadway.
  • Beginning Monday, June 9, 4th Avenue between 8th and 9th Streets will be closed to through traffic to allow the contractor to install trolley tracks along this section of roadway. Pedestrian access to all businesses will be available. This closure is expected to be in place through Friday, July 18.
  • On Thursday, June 12, between 6 a.m. and noon, southbound 5th Avenue between Congress Street and Broadway will be closed to allow the contractor to complete trolley track installation along this section of roadway.
9th STREET TRAFFIC SHIFT
  • Traffic on 9th Street east of the 4th Avenue intersection is shifted to the south side of the roadway to allow the contractor to upgrade underground drainage facilities in the area. This work is scheduled to be complete in mid June.
5TH AVENUE TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS
  • Through the month of June, 5th Avenue between Toole Avenue and Broadway will be restricted to southbound travel only to allow the contractor to complete underground utility work, trolley track installation and other roadway improvements in the area. However, on Thursday, June 12, this section of 5th Avenue will be closed between 6 a.m. and noon.
EASTBOUND BROADWAY TRAFFIC SHIFTS
  • Eastbound Broadway traffic between 6th and 4th Avenues will be shifted to the south side of the roadway in order to accommodate underground utility work, track installation and roadway improvements in the area. This work is expected to be ongoing through June.
The following traffic impacts remain in effect:
  • Utility work on 9th Street/Stevens Avenue between 4th Avenue and 8th Street continues. 9th Street/Stevens Avenue will remain closed through mid-June 2008. Business access will be maintained via 4th Avenue.
  • 4th Avenue Underpass is closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
  • Fourth Avenue businesses can be reached by using 6th Street.
  • Parking is available at the Pennington Street Garage. The entrance to the garage is located on Scott Avenue, just north of Congress Street.

ACCESS TO BUSINESSES WILL BE MAINTAINED AT ALL TIMES

IN THE EVENT OF MECHANICAL FAILURE OR INCLEMENT WEATHER, THE ABOVE SCHEDULE IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE.

Motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians: Please be cautious, obey all posted construction signage, reduced speed limits and remember to share the road.

The Tucson Department of Transportation (TDOT) keeps Tucson moving smoothly and safely. The Department’s nearly 400 employees oversee the maintenance and reconstruction of nearly 4,400 lane miles of streets and are responsible for hundreds of drainage structures, public art pieces, street lights and signs, and traffic signs and signals in Tucson. TDOT also operates the City’s transit services, Sun Tran and Van Tran.
