TRAFFIC ALERT

Date: January 8, 2008

FIVE POINTS INTERSECTION TO REOPEN WITH TRAFFIC SHIFT AND RESTRICTIONS

On Thursday, January 10, 2008, the intersection of Stone Avenue at the Five Points, Stone Avenue/Sixth Avenue/18th Street intersection will reopen. Two-way traffic will resume with one lane northbound and one lane southbound. This will allow the contractor to install a new waterline and utility companies will perform required upgrades. New curbs, ramps and sidewalks will be installed and the roadway will be milled and preped for upcoming paving and striping.

TRAFFIC SHIFT: Northbound and southbound traffic on South Sixth Avenue, between 18th and 19th Streets, will be shifted to the west side of Sixth Avenue with one lane in each direction. Work hours will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. This work will take approximately two months.

The Five Points, Stone Avenue/ Sixth Avenue/ 18th Street Improvement project, began on Monday, November 12, 2007. The project amenities include resurfacing both Sixth Avenue and Stone Avenue, drainage improvements, and re-striping for two-way traffic between 18th Street and Broadway. The project is scheduled to be complete in approximately six months, however, this schedule is approximate and may vary depending on weather and other construction-related issues.

The traveling public can expect delays when driving, bicycling or walking in this work area. Business access will be maintained. For your safety, please observe all traffic control signage, message boards, and obey reduced speed limits. Watch for construction personnel and equipment in the work zone.

The Tucson Department of Transportation (TDOT) keeps Tucson moving smoothly and safely. The Department’s nearly 400 employees oversee the maintenance and reconstruction of nearly 4,400 lane miles of streets and are responsible for hundreds of drainage structures, public art pieces, street lights and signs, and traffic signs and signals in Tucson. TDOT also operates the City’s transit services, Sun Tran and Van Tran.
